Youth Pottery Level I

SATURDAYS 9 am – 10:30 am [Pottery Studio, lower level]
This class will introduce students to basic hand building skills and glazing techniques. Students will learn pinching to create cups, coiling to make bowls and rolling slabs to make a wall plaque or small box. We will work with a variety of textures and patterns to create decorative surface designs on clay. Glazing will include working with under glazes and learning brushing techniques. Students can expect to finish 3-5 pieces.

This class will introduce students to basic wheel throwing. We will focus on creating functional forms such as cups, bowls and small vessels. In addition to working on the wheel students will use hand building techniques to create round, square, rectangular and triangular forms. Projects include a lantern, a hanging mobile and a lidded form such as a teapot or jar. We will also work with stamps and sprig/press molds to create low relief forms that become decorative motifs that can be attached to a piece. Glazing techniques include working with resists, scraffito and under glazing techniques.
Advanced Youth Pottery

SATURDAYS 11 am - 12:30 pm [Sculpture Studio, lower level]
This class will introduce students to using an extruder and to slip casting and mold making. Both extruding and slip casting are methods that allow the student to create multiple similar forms that can be combined into functional as well as sculptural pieces. We will also work with drape and slump molds to create bowls and trays or dishes. We will continue with hand building and wheel throwing. Projects include creating a dinner setting (a plate, dish, bowl and cup), either a one or two piece mold, an extruded sculptural piece and a small mosaic.
Wearable Art

There are eight wheels available for those who want to work on their throwing skills and hand-building is also available. The focus will be on helping the children find and use their imaginations in creating fun projects. The course will introduce and teach some of the basic art elements of color, line, shape and texture to create art work as well as identifying and using basic art supplies in a variety of ways.

The children will be given a basic understanding of how to use each of the art elements of color, line, shape, space, texture and value while learning how to create landscapes, portraits, and abstract art. Exploring Visual Expression

Bringing your canvas to life will be made possible through weekly classes which will explore expression in the medium of the student’s choice. Classical music will be played to enhance the student to arrive in an awareness of what it means to be a fine artist. The Passion to Paint

Cartooning I

This is a great course for young cartoonist! Cartooning I introduces the students to basic cartooning techniques starting with stick figures and basic shapes. The students will learn how to draw objects and make them funny by using exaggeration and distortion and how to add human attributes to objects. They will also learn how to use a variety of mediums and tools available to cartoonists and learn basic techniques for developing their own characters. By the end of this class, the students will have created several cartoons, some of which will be proudly displayed in our end of semester gallery showcase! **These techniques will carry over into Cartooning II class, and be explored more in depth. Cartooning II

Cartooning II is a continuation from the Cartooning I class, however more advanced techniques are explored. The students will pick up where they left off in Cartooning I with character development. The student will learn how to draw characters in various views such as front view, profile view, ¾ views, bird’s eye view and worm’s eye view. The students will learn techniques for setting up comic book panels such as; backgrounds, perspective, lettering for dialogue balloons, inking techniques, setting up panels and color. Once this is learned, the students will create a storyline and characters for their own comic book page to be completed by the end of class and displayed proudly in our end of semester gallery showcase!
